White Buffalo Calf Woman
Two young Indian braves were out hunting together. Their duty was to bring home to their tribe meat to nourish all the people of the tribe. But after hunting all day they were empty handed and feared returning to the tribe with nothing. They persisted in their hunt and finally they came into a clearing and there stood a white buffalo calf.
As they readied their bows and arrows the white buffalo calf suddenly morphed into a young woman of extraordinary beauty dressed in white deerskin. Her long jet black hair reached all the way down to the backs of her knees. Her face was exquisite and she seemed to be radiating a powerful white light. She held out the palms of her hands towards the two braves.
Both young braves dropped their bows and arrows and stared at the supernatural apparition. One of the braves was overcome by lust for the woman. As the woman looked at him he disintegrated into dust and the dust fell to the earth. He was gone.
The other brave felt his heart exploding with pure love. When the woman looked at him he dropped to his knees in total surrender to the woman's beauty.
The woman spoke to him, "I am White Buffalo Calf woman. I represent the unconditional love with which the Creator created this world. There are two ways humans can respond to unconditional love. One way is the way your brother here responded," she pointed at the pile of dust on the ground where the other brave had stood. "He responded through desire to possess that which he perceived as separate from himself."
She continued, "In unconditional love there is no separation. All is one. Failing to see the one-ness of all life and seeing everything as separate is what brings disharmony and disease to the people. There is no end to life except in the perception of the human mind and the human heart that does not allow unconditional love to flow through it. In this world there are the cycles of birth and death but life flows through all and is eternal. Life is the unconditional love of the Creator flowing through its creation and it is indestructible. It is what sustains all things. To go against this by perceiving separation results in....." Once again, she pointed towards the pile of dust on the ground where the other brave had been standing.
Tears of joy flowed down the face of the brave kneeling before the holy woman.
She looked deep into his eyes and his soul, "You are blessed. Now go back to your tribe and tell them of what you learned here. Tell them that unconditional love, which is NOT the lustful love of attraction your fellow brave exhibited, is what will lead all peoples to their divine birthright upon this planet. It is what all of you came from and to which all of you will return. Let it guide all of your thoughts and actions. Tell them there are two ways to respond to unconditional love; the way you did and the way your brother did."
"Your people will face great struggle soon. People will come who know nothing of unconditional love and they will break the spirit of your people. But beyond that will come a time when white buffalo calves will be born to herald a new age in which unconditional love will return in the hearts of peoples everywhere. Accept it and allow it into your hearts now and you will survive all struggles. With this unconditional love you will be blessed and you may bless all of life."
With this the beautiful woman disappeared into thin air. The young brave stood up and wiped his face of tears. He swiftly ran back to his tribe to tell them of what he experienced.
Please note that this is my personal retelling of a Native American legend common to numerous tribes. The story varies from tribe to tribe. For at least one tribe the woman first appeared as a whooping crane instead of a white buffalo calf. The essence of the story is the same throughout all the tribes and that is the explanation of unconditional love.
