Saffron Pudding
Do you have a particular all-time favorite dessert experience? Do you have a memory of the absolute best dessert you have ever eaten in your life? I do.
It happened during my vagabond years around thirty years ago. At the time I was traveling from Florida to California and I happened to be traveling through Las Cruces, New Mexico right around dinner time. Spotting an Indian restaurant I immediately pulled over. I have always been eager to try new foods and at that point in my life I had never tried Indian food.
I found it a little odd that Las Cruces would even have an Indian restaurant. I had plenty of memories of Las Cruces from when I lived near there as a small child but most of what I remembered involved Hispanic culture. I did not know there were people from India living there.
It was a long time ago and I do not even remember what I had for dinner at that restaurant in Las Cruces. I have no recollection whatsoever. But I have a very distinct memory of what I had for dessert. It was the very best dessert I have ever experienced in my life.
The waitress brought by a dessert cart and I spotted something that looked interesting. The waitress said it was saffron pudding with rose petal juice. Well, that certainly sounded exotic so I picked it.
The second I put the first bite into my mouth I went into a state of culinary rapture. My body immediately began tingling from head to toe. I had never tasted anything so exquisitely wonderful....yet oddly there was a sense of familiarity to it. How could that be? Perhaps it had been a favorite dessert in another life. I do not know.
All I knew is that I found the most wonderful dessert in the whole world. I ate it very, very slowly, savoring it for as long as I could--and implanting it forever on my memory. Even now, thirty years later, I still get tingles just thinking about it.
